The environment is a general term that describes the totality of life on earth. It also can be used in science as a term describing the earth’s atmosphere, and the biosphere. The environment encompasses all existing living and non-existing things occurring naturally, which means in this instance not man made.

The word is most frequently used in biology and ecology. Biology and ecology use the term environment interchangeably, but have different concepts and therefore require two distinct vocabulary. Environment is the totality of living systems (both biotic and abiotic) in nature. In its broadest sense the environment can be considered to include all of Earth’s ecosystems, all forms of ecosystems, all habitats (land, water, air, and landice), all climates, and all aspects of life. The environment can be classified primarily into two domains, those of the living world (ontogenetic environments) and those of the non-living world (hostial environments).

Biotic environments are those in which living organisms co-exist with their predators, such as birds, amphibians, mammals, and fishes. Hostile environments are those in which organisms have competition for food, and in which they have the power to expel an organism from their habitat to make it prey. The habitat of the host can be anything. It might be a natural setting like the forest, a mine, the ocean, or a pond or stream. A physical barrier, such as a coast, may also define the boundaries of a biotic environment.

An ecosystem is a system in which living organisms interact within their respective environments. It may be a river, a lake, a landmass, or any other such body of water or land. It may comprise of soil, vegetation, animal matter, or microorganisms. Each type of environment has particular characteristics, which make it suitable for particular kinds of organisms. Oceans, for instance, are home to a great number of microbial colonies, which provide a rich source of food for fish and other aquatic organisms.

Environment refers to both the living world and the non-living world. Therefore, the word ecology directly implies the relationship between the living and non-life aspects of the ecosystems. The environment may be complex, and quite diverse; it may be made of many different components, or it may be a very simple system. It is the composition of the environment that gives it a description.

It is important to note that no system is complete without the corresponding environment. For instance, there could be no ocean without the oceans, and there could be no ecosystem without the bacteria that create it. However, it is possible to draw a general conclusion about the nature of the environment, as the overall composition of the environment plays an important role in the functioning of all the interacting organism. Some examples of interacting organisms include termites, algae, protozoa, and all of the higher animals. The composition of the environment also affects the stability of the ecosystem, since some aspects of the environment facilitate the survival of certain species and inhibit the survival of others, or vice versa.
