An Understanding of Energy Storage Options
In physics, all forms of energy are kinetic. This means that they are not potential energy nor is there an ultimate energy. For instance, a given body possesses kinetic energy when it is moving. A spring or bow, while at rest, also has the ability to generate motion; however, because of its fixed configuration, it already possesses potential energy due to its position.
Kinetic energy is a function of mass and velocity, which can be measured at various times by different scientists. Quantum mechanics states that energy is a function of the amount of matter present, and in what form this matter is in. Since energy cannot be changed into another form, it must be originated from some sort of atom.
The other theory used to describe motion is the electromagnetic theory. This theory states that the motion we see around us is a result of electromagnetic radiation interacting with molecules. It is believed that the nuclear energy released by stars, black holes and even exploding stars, travels through empty space. When light interacts with this radiation, the resulting motion is referred to as radiant energy.
When considering the question “What is energy?” another way to answer this question is to think of it in terms of the different forms of energy and how they are stored. Kinetic energy is the energy that is necessary to move things; the potential energy is the energy needed to store the energy. An example of potential energy is the energy a body possesses when it is still in its resting state. The final form of energy is chemical energy, which is energy required to make chemical reactions occur.
Another important concept to understand is that of the renewable energy sources. Nonrenewable sources of energy include the fossil fuels that are used to power our cars. There is also the natural sources such as wind and sun, which are both nonrenewable and therefore cannot be depleted. These types of energy come at a cost, however, so you will generally have to pay a higher cost to power your home with them.

Thermal energy storage uses heat from the sun or the heat of the ocean to store energy. The solar panels on your home absorb this heat, which is then transformed into electricity. There are many different types of thermal energy storage systems available, including those that use salt or sand, but most systems can use a simple attic panel.
